Phonovention 2005 Review

The Michigan Antique Phonograph Society (MAPS) conducts the annual Phonovention as an annual convention with a meeting, seminars, competition, vendor market, banquet, and educational programs. Phonovention 2005 was conducted on October 7 & 8 at the Best Western Midway Hotel in Lansing, Michigan.

Presented here are photos and descriptions of some of the 'action' at Phonovention 2005.

On Friday afternoon, the vendors set up and members began looking for the part, record, or machine they wanted. The MAPS meeting started at 7:30 pm Friday evening in the hotel's auditorium. Following the meeting, Jack Palmer presented an interesting program about his favorite subject, Vernon Dalhart. Jack has recently publicshed a book "Vernon Dalhart: First Star of Country Music."

On Saturday, the vendors opened for business and the competition registration began in earnest. The first of three seminars started at 10 am in the hotel meeting room. The three seminars were:

Saturday evening, the Phonovention Banquet was held followed by an appearance by John Philip Sousa (impersonated by Matt Brown). Matt then presented a program called, "SOUSA!" with a highlight of the program was the original Sousaphone built by JK. W. Pepper for Mr. Sousa in 1893. As usual, there were door prizes and contest awards following the banquet and program.
