Local Chapters
|
Since the Michigan Antique Phonograph Society is worldwide in scope, many members have organized chapters in their local area. These chapters conduct their own local events and meetings.
|
|
 |
MAPS has eleven local chapters in the U.S. In addition to facilitating interaction between members about restoration, maintenance, buying and selling, etc., most of the chapters conduct events.
More information about each chapter is available below.

The task of selecting meeting sites, coordinating collections to visit, arranging workshops, finding speakers for meetings, etc. are all time consuming efforts arranged by MAPS chapter volunteers.
See the MAPS Event List on the MAPS home page for more information.

In 1993, the Wisconsin and Illinois Chapter was the second regional chapter (Michigan is the first) chartered under the Michigan Antique Phonograph Society. We are known as the "Wisconsin Cheeseheads" and have a properly adorned Nipper as our logo. Our Wisconsin and Illinois organization is a group of dedicated collectors of phonographs, records, and anything related to the area of vintage phonographs and music. We meet four times per year for the purpose of extending our knowledge, learning from others by sharing collections and generally have a good time.
Our membership numbers about 80 with members in several states. Twelve to twenty members regularly attend our local functions. These get-togethers include meeting at a collector's home, attending a local music or jazz festivals, an informative dinner meeting, or meeting for a holiday or theme event. Occasionally our meetings are hi-lighted by a silent auction or an informative presentation by a member.
Our family dues are $14.00 for a two year membership. We enjoy fellowship of people who collect and share phonograph and music collecting. A 12 page newsletter is published four times a year. Our chapter helps promote regional events, such as the Bunny Berigan Jazz Festival in Fox Lake, WI, and individual community events including school and museum presentations.

The Golden State Phonograph Society is the California Chapter of MAPS, founded in 1999 by a small group of eight Southern California phonograph collectors with the idea of having a roving monthly meeting, rotating from one member's home to another. At the time, others speculated that the group would not last once everyone had hosted a meeting. On the contrary, the club has now been in existence for over ten years, and is still going strong. We've met at homes, museums, we have attended special events at theatres and historical parks, and always have a good time. We have seen spectacular collections and have had very interesting programs presented by members and non-members.
Our newsletter, the GSPS Record, has is in its 11th year of publication. In 2004 we presented our first Lifetime Achievement Award to Ray Phillips, for his outstanding contributions to the field.
We have members from New Jersey to California and several places in between. If you live in California or are a visitor and are interested in seeing what we do, please feel free to join us. Our schedule will be published on our website, www.gsps1.org. We meet on the first Sunday of every other month.

Most of the Iowa Chapter members are from southeast Iowa and the close surrounding area. The collections range from large to small and that vary immensely from mainly phonograph collections to other collections that are quite varied. We have members who collect antique radios, clocks, music boxes, organettes, and player pianos. We have a network of repair members with different levels of expertise. Most of the time we can get our machines repaired or rebuilt within the group. We would welcome any prospective new members at any of our meetings to share our passions. We do have our annual meeting at Union in June so that is a good time to look us up.
