Upcoming Events

The upcoming MAPS meetings and other events are as follows:

  • Date - City, State - Description

  • April 19 - Wayne, New Jersey - Mechanical Music Extravaganza at the Wayne Police Athletic League Building. See page 20 of the April ITG.

  • April 23 - Charlotte, Michigan - Preview of Stanton's Spring Phonograph Auction in the 4-H building at the Eaton County Fairgrounds. Preview and luncheon open from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm. See page 16 of the April ITG. Consult the auction web page for more information or send an e-mail.

  • April 24-25 - Charlotte, Michigan - Stanton's Spring Phonograph Auction in the 4-H building at the Eaton County Fairgrounds. The auction starts both days at 9:00 am with preview available at 7:00 am. Already included in the auction are phonograph collections from Washington D.C. and West Virginia, roller organs, a needle tin collection, Vogue records, and more. Click the map to get a better map to the fairgrounds. See page 16 of the April ITG. Consult the auction web page for more information or send an e-mail.

  • April 25 - Charlotte, Michigan - Informal MAPS supper meeting after the Stanton auction.

  • May 2 (closes) - On-line or Mail - Nauck's Vintage Record Auction 45 - Silver Anniversary Edition - is ready! If you thought the last catalog was superb, wait until you get a load of this one. From mint Victor Scrolls to the rarest Caruso recordings on G&T & Zonophone; from Berliners to Paramount 13,000s - this auction is a doozy. And what about cylinders? How about a 1928 Blue Amberol recording of Ronald Campbell from the British Embassy returning the original (tinfoil) phonograph back to Thomas Edison, who then thanks the British government for its return.
Like the last catalog, you will find several hundred blues and jazz recordings including fabulous rarities often in stellar condition. There is also a huge section of books, catalogs and sheet music, plus a McIntosh 30 amplifier, a Garrard 301 turntable and 2 Edison cylinder machines.
    Check the on-line auction page.

  • May 15-17 - Fox Lake, Wisconsin - Bunny Berigan Jazz Jubilee. For details contact Julie Flemming, event coordinator, at 920-928-6094 or by e-mail or check the web page.

  • May 17 - Salem, Oregon - Sounds of Nostalgia Antique Phono and Records Show at the Salem Armory Auditorium, 2310 17th St. NE. Tables (8 feet long) are for rent at $20. For more info, call 541-619-5708 or inquire by e-mail.

  • May 24 - North Attleboro, Massachusetts - The next meeting of the Massachusetts Old Colony Antique Phonograph Society will be held at the home of member Don Houde, 132 Hoppin Hill Avenue. Arrival time will be between 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. As usual, luncheon donations including entrees and deserts are always welcome. The theme for this meeting will be anything Berliner and Victor. This would cover a wide variety of phonographs, accessories, records and ephemera related to these two early giants of the Gramophone and Talking Machine industry. Zonophone can be included as well, as the original founder had ties to Berliner and Zonophone was later acquired by Victor. I am sure everyone has interesting Gramophones and talking machines and records as well as related accessories relative to this theme, so this should be an extremely interesting and informative meeting. Please RSVP Don at his e-mail to confirm your attendance and also receive directions. We thank Don & his wife in advance for hosting this event and look forward to seeing you all there.

  • May 27-30 - Washington, D.C. - ARSC 43rd annual conference. Check the web site.

  • June 13-14 - Union, Illinois - Phonograph & Music Box Show and Sale.

  • July 31 - August 1 - Auburn, Indiana - Phonovention 2009 will be conducted at the National Military History Museum.

Check your In The Groove for other future events, auctions, and sales.

If your phonograph, record, or other antique mechanical music society, would like to have its event listed here and in In The Groove, send your item to the editors.

In The Groove

In The Groove is the MAPS monthly newsletter sent to all members in good standing. Each monthly issue is composed of about 24 pages with articles and ads about antique phonographs, records, recording artists, and related advertising. Notices of auctions, helpful hints, wanted to buy, for sale, advertisements, and a swap shop (about four two-column pages!) are all a part of the ITG. The ITG editors are Phil & Eileen Stewart. You can email them at ITG@michiganantiquephonographsociety.org or send them a note at the address above.
Phil and Eileen do a fantastic job on ITG each month! I don't know how they get anything else done! They are valuable constituents of MAPS.
Thank you Phil & Eileen!
